Packaging & Production Designer

This is a full-time role for a detail-oriented, ambitious, and self-driven individual eager to thrive in a fast-paced, creative environment.

As a Packaging & Production Designer, you will collaborate closely with the  Product Development Team, and Brand Creative Team to develop a broad range of creative assets, including packaging, retailer displays, mechanicals, product mockups, digital renderings, and more. You will play a key role in ensuring brand consistency, high-quality execution, and seamless production across all design projects.

This role requires a strong eye for detail, technical expertise in print and digital production, and the ability to adapt designs for various retail and marketing needs. Role Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize & Design: Work closely with the Product Development Team, and Brand Creative Team to design a variety of creative assets, including packaging, retailer displays, mechanicals, product mockups, and digital renderings.

  • End-to-End Design Management: Oversee the full design lifecycle, from initial concept development to final production, ensuring all designs meet brand guidelines and production specifications.

  • Expert Design Knowledge: Apply expertise in graphic design, packaging design, and print production to deliver high-quality materials across multiple formats.

  • Mechanical Layouts & Pre-Press: Prepare detailed mechanical layouts and pre-press files for various substrates, including labels, shrink sleeves, direct prints, and cards.

  • Brand Consistency: Ensure all designs maintain a consistent and cohesive brand identity across all consumer touchpoints.

  • Vendor & Collaboration Management: Work cross-functionally with the Product Development Team, internal teams, and third-party collaborators to ensure projects are executed efficiently.

  • Pre-Flight & File Management: Oversee pre-flight checks for all print-ready materials, ensuring proper archiving and organization of graphic production files, source files, and templates.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Understand and apply legal and regulatory requirements for packaging, including warning/hazard symbols, text size, and labeling standards.

  • Creative Solutions: Provide innovative and practical design solutions that support product development and marketing strategies.

  • Research & Trend Analysis: Stay informed on industry trends, best practices, and consumer insights to offer fresh, relevant design recommendations.

  • Process Optimization: Partner with cross-functional teams to streamline workflows and ensure timely delivery of design assets under tight production deadlines.

  • Multitasking & Prioritization: Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, while adapting to changing priorities.


Role Requirements:

  • Graduate of Packaging, Graphic Design, or a related field from a recognized university or college.

  • 3+ years of experience in packaging design, ideally within the beauty, fashion, or consumer goods industries.

  • Strong understanding of color theory and best practices for Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) design.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), and Mac OSX.

  • Experience with digital render development and the ability to create realistic 2D/3D mockups.

  • A strong portfolio showcasing expertise in branding, typography, and CPG packaging design.

  • Deep understanding of market trends and the social media landscape, with an eye for trend-forward design.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, with a strategic approach to design challenges.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design concepts to the Product Development and Brand Creative teams.

  • Experience in designing for in-store retail environments, including shelf displays, trade show booths, and marketing assets.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring that all designs meet technical specifications and project deadlines.


Bonus Skills: 

  • Agency or in-house experience

  • Fluent in French

We do have staff who work remotely, but our HQ is in downtown Ottawa.

We're still a small, tight knit team. Most of our team is located in Ottawa, Canada, but we now have employees spanning across the world remotely.

To date, Bushbalm is in over 5,000 waxing salons, and on shelves nation wide at Ulta Beauty.

We're growing our team and departments at a fast pace. Our most mature departments are Marketing and Product Development.

Other departments that are well established include Operations, Customer Service, Design and Finance.

Our team is primarily headquartered in Ottawa, Canada.

We're open to remote candidates, but would like to hire first in Ottawa, so we can gather easily. In regards to your workday, we are a flex model and allow employees to work remote when they wish.
